KDU rotaract seizes RCL title again

By Rtr. Thamalee Wijekoon

The Rotaract Club of KDU celebrated its second consecutive championship at the second Rotaract Champions League held from the 9th to the 10th of January 2016. The club secured the position by winning the championship of four sports out of the eight held and showing colours in track and field events. We won the championship in badminton, basketball, chess and table tennis, achieved several more wins in other sports and lost a few games at the same time too.

Harder the battle – sweeter the victory

Beating RCSLIIT at 2 out of 3 matches and winning the men’s singles and the mixed doubles promised the shuttlers a trophy back home with no strings attached. A well-controlled shuttle placement coupled with a few powerful smashes played the trick. The player of women’s singles also put up a good fight to score towards winning the game. But the basketball championship didn’t come as a piece of cake. The ball left finger tips enough until RCKDU pulled out a nail biting 17-16 victory on the RCUOC faculty of science in the final game. Needless to mention that the slam- dunks, wraparounds and the blind passes left the audience in awe.

Athletics, however paved a clear path for winning the championship. Accordingly;

100m women’s -2nd and 3rd places

200m women’s – 1st place

400m women’s – 1st and 2nd places

1500m women’s – 1st and 3rd places

100*4 women’s – 1st place

200m men’s – 3rd place

1500m men’s – 3rd place

Shot-put men’s- 3rd place

were all secured by the RCKDU athletes.

For the black cannot capture the knight..

KDU rotaractors also led a great game of chess and were placed as champions and the table tennis victory made the cherry on top. We are also reminiscing the tough game of carom played with RCUOM, although we were not able to turn the tables.

Tugging at glory

Though the first match of tag rugby with RC College of Chemical Sciences came as easy as a 3-0 win, the team had to lose at the second encounter with RCIIT. The tug o’ war men’s game with RC Achievers reached such a level of intensity that even the rope couldn’t handle as it broke into two pieces in the middle of the game. However the RCKDU team managed to thrive in the game with edulink and pull a third place towards themselves.

Futsal FTW

Actually, futsal was among the few games that fell out of our grasp. But we witnessed several ridiculously amazing shots there, whether or not they managed to push it over the goal line. “I passed the ball by rebounding from the rear. It was fun.. running around with your team mates up and down. It was a proper unity game..both the parties were enjoying the moment.. respecting one another.. started the game with a smile, we lost, but with a smile..” said one of our futsal team mates. This, we believe is the true spirit of sports and seemingly RCL had sure lived up to it.
